Representing Leonardo da Vinci's betrothal portrait of the forlorn 16 or 17 year old Florentine beauty and intellect, Ginevra de Benci, who, in 1474 was whispered to be a deeply reluctant bride when she the 15th of January was married to Luigi di Bernardo Niccolini who was twice her age. The inscription Iuniperus, meaning a juniper sprig, (an old symbol of sorrow and pain), and Virtutem Forma Decorat - 'Beauty Adorns Virtue', are painted on the reverse of the portrait board. (This is the first known portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci.)

A more than 7 cm (3") long antiqued pewter focal of an intricately carved Baroque outer frame, set with a large, black Swarovski crystal surrounded by a finely etched brass frame at its centre, and a black Swarovski crystal teardrop suspended beneath.

On a double, draped trace chain with an overall length of 41 cm (16") plus a 35 mm long extender chain and with a lobster claw clasp. (Nickel, lead and cadmium compliant.)

Dimensions (approx.): H: 84 mm (3.31"), W: 41 mm (1.61") and D: 7 mm (0.28"). Weight (approx.): 50 grams (1.76 oz).
